Applying for a Job

Ok, you know what you want to do and where you want to work. Your CV is perfectly written and tailored to the job for which you want to apply. All that is left to do is apply, but before you do, ask yourself the following:

• Is the recruiting company/agency reputable?
• Are my skills suitable for the role?
• Is it in the right location?
• Is the package in line with my qualifications and expectations?
• Does the role offer better prospects better than I already have?
• Will I be any more or less employable if I accept the position?
• Is it in the correct or relevant industry sector?

If you answer 'yes' to most of the above questions then you will want to make sure your application gets seen by the right person. You may want to consider the following:

• Keep your covering letter/email brief and to the point - your aim should be to get an interview.
• When telephoning for information be prepared, as this may turn into an interview.
• Consider the way adverts are worded - what are they really asking for?
• Match your skills to the job - give reasons to be interviewed.
• When submitting your CV by e-mail, use key words and phrases in the subject line that match your CV to the advert.
